The EFA Ladder Competition, from John Cooley - October 1st 2005
To all Eton Fives Players,
The start of the ladder competition is almost upon us - the first event is this coming Wednesday 5th October - 7:15pm at Highgate School.
To enter, contact John Cooley as soon as possible by email at john@cooleyj.freeserve.co.uk or by phone on 01959 574288 - leave message on answerphone if I'm not in. When entering by whatever means please give your full name (and phone number in case I need to phone you) as it can be very difficult to identify people from email addresses.
Deadline for entries is 6pm Tuesday 4th October but if there isn't a complete set of fours you might well get in after this time, so do try. This is a late deadline for the first event only.
The first 2 events will be used to establish a preliminary order and will run as follows:
1. Depending on the number of competitors, players will be placed in an ability group purely to avoid completely unequal matches.
2. Players will be allocated a number at random within their ability group - first court and partner will follow from that number (Court 1 - 1&4v2&3, 2 - 5&8v6&7 etc.).
3. Games will be played to 15 - foot (step) at 14 with no setting. If the time limit (see below) has not been reached players may swap and should play out the time on their court. Only the game to 15 will count for the competition.
4. Games will be time limited to about 40 minutes. The winning pair will be the pair with the highest score if 15 has not been reached. If the score is tied, the pair who reached that score first are the winners.
5. The winning pair will move up a court and split, the losing pair will move down a court and split. Highest and lowest number players will play against the middle numbered players except that a player should not play with the same partner again in the event.
6. Players will accumulate points - the points difference against their opponents in each game added together (the maximum difference in each game is 15).
7. Points will be awarded at the end of the event based on each players final court position as if a further round were to be played (i.e. final round winners of court 1 and winners of court 2 are on court 1, losers of court 1 and winners of court3 are on court 2, winners of court 4 and losers of court 2 are on court 3 etc.). Total points will decide the player's ladder position for the next event.
8. Players entering the competition after the first round will be placed in the ladder according to an approximate assessment of their ability
Following events are intended to be "traditional" 5-game matches. This is intended to tie in with the introduction of the new IT system currently being developed - more details are available at www.fivesonline.co.uk which also has an introduction to the ladder.
